Barr Street Market — 1957

This rare photograph shows shoppers at Fort Wayne's Historic Barr Street Market in 1957.

The market originally opened in 1837, when Sam Hanna donated land for a city hall (which was located across the street and now houses the History Center). In 1910, the market was enhanced with a cover. Operating morning through evening six days a week, the Barr Street Market regularly drew thousands of customers. However, the market's popularity and physical condition declined by the late 1950s, and while the area was partially retored in the 1970s, it was never the same.

Presently, the Barr Street Market is set to reopen this summer as part of a project started last fall by the Young Leader sof Northeast Indiana, with help from the History Center.
