Blog Hunter: Pundits, haggis, Mark Cuban, and a cartoon rabbit

Last column’s riddle about Chinese New Year and Robbie Burns Day jumped the gun by about two weeks or so. Or did it? The Blog Hunter is always thinking ahead, because this puzzle involves a trip. The answer is www.gunghaggisfatchoy.com, a blog I found on www.eatingchinese.org . This cultural oddity is the name of an annual dinner in Vancouver hosted by Toddish McWong where Robbie Burns Day and Chinese New Year are celebrated at the same table. Me- I prefer just the plain old Gung Hay Fat Choy to ring in the year of the Rooster; have you ever looked up “haggis” in the dictionary? Ugh.

Speaking of strange names, Wine Blogging Wednesdays 5 will be coming down to the wire when this Reader edition drops. You can be part of the action; go out and find the wackiest named wine and then post it on your blog. Don’t have a blog yet? Go tell www.chezpim.typepad.com all about your crazy find. This San Francisco foodie is the host of this month’s event.

It’s still January so we still have to deal with football. www.sports.espn.go.com/page2/Simmons will keep you informed as the teams go down to the wire. But of course we are Hoosiers so the real sport must be basketball. Leave it to Mark Cuban owner of the Dallas Mavericks to have a blog entitled Blog Maverick in which he spouts off equally on stats and highlights, gives presidential pointers as well as plugging his own ventures. How about a gambling hedge fund? Surely I’m not being redundant, check out www.blogmaverick.com to find out.

The blogosphere is not just for smart mouthed over zealous pundits, look ma, it’s for kids too. www.pbskids.org/buster/blog details the fictional travels of Buster Baxter a rabbit originally from Marc Brown’s cartoon series Arthur on PBS.

Follow Buster’s lead and escape winter, or just get away for a year. Check out www.edsgonesouth.com/blog and click on Argentina when you get there. Incredible pictures of South American scenery are posted from his year-long motorcycle trek to the Southern most point of the Americas.

Then again, maybe you adore snow and can’t get enough of winter sports. Although we don’t have the Rockies or the Sierra Nevada at our backdoor we can always check out www.snowgo.com to read about snowboarding.

All this talk of winter reminds me of two other sites where snow jobs abound; some to be uncovered and others created just in good fun. If you like to get your dose of current events in a Daily Show fashion, check out www.celluloid-wisdom/pw where the comments are as entertaining as the original posts. Irreverent is putting it mildly. If you want a bit more serious coverage go to www.instapundit.com where you’ll only wish the news was far fetched.

Next up: Valentine’s Day in the blogosphere.
