Our “best of the old school pics” features seem to be fairly popular — lots of copies get picked up, at least — so for this issue we dug into the archives to bring you a few seasonal or holiday-themed images we’ve run over the years.
Winter in Reservoir Park, 1930s
This is winter in Reservoir Park, probably sometime in the 1930s, with ice skaters, sleds, and even bicyclers. This is taken from the top of the reservoir looking west towards Clinton Street.
Christmas at the ACPL, 1950
A Christmas tree adorns the lobby of the Wayne Street building of the Allen County Public Library, December 1950.
A Christmas You Can Bank On
The information we have says this might be the old Anthony Wayne Bank at 6102 US 24 West, all decorated for Christmas. We don’t know what year this is.
Lincoln Tower, 1977
A nice shot of the Lincoln Tower at night, all lit up for Christmas. The photo was taken from Court Street (not around anymore), and the courthouse is over on your right. We even have a specific date for this one: December 13, 1977.
February, 1965
We like to think most of these Old School Pics evoke the happier aspects of the season. But not this photo. This photo — dated 2/25/65 and showing the corner of Main and Van Buren — just makes us feel the chill. Was there a “Storm of ‘65” that’s talked about in the same hushed tones as “the Blizzard of ‘78” (or is it ’79)? We don’t know. We also have no idea if what were seeing here is part of an emergency response to a huge winter storm, or if this was just some guy who got his car stuck in an unplowed street. But it looks cold.
Berry and Calhoun, 1979
Crossing Berry at Calhoun November 27, 1979. We have no idea who the pedestrians are, but it struck us as a very “Fort Wayne November evening” kind of scene.
