So IPFW is going to have a new name now. Purdue University Fort Wayne. PUFW. Pee-yew Fort Wayne? That's what it's heading towards, unfortunately. Or maybe people will call it Puf-Dubya.

I prefer P-dubs. Much hipper instead of four letters, which, when you say them, sorta sums up the way a lot of people feel about Fort Wayne.

I don't think they've rushed out to print the letterhead yet, so it's not too early to change the name to Harry Baals University.

Seriously! It could work. I suggested this to a colleague of mine, and she laughed, but said it would make us a laughingstock. Well, for a city once named the fattest and dumbest in the country, I think we have bigger things to worry about. And why not? Harry Baals University: Balls to the wall education.

The logo could be altered as needed. They could be modified to look like basketballs, soccer balls, baseballs, volleyballs, etc. And, for feminist-oriented events, you could slap a comic-looking bra on them.

Okay, maybe I seem a little bit distasteful and wacky right now. But I'm in an interesting mood. A better mood than I've been in in a long time. I'll admit it. I'm happy. It's not for the most orthodox reason, of course, but I'm happy. Hopeful. And a believer in karma.

But let's get back to IPFW's new identity as Puf Uni, or Puf-Dubby, or PufWa or PU Fort Wayne or whatever. It could have been a more unique catchphrase, but no. Ooo-eee pooo-eee was the preferred nickname when I graduated high school. Now, who knows? I guess we'll see.

I still think they should have called Weather the Fort “Frozenman,” but that's another column for another time.
