A few more photos taken from the time capsule discovered in the wall of the downtown Hall’s/Takaoka restaurant during their renovations a few years ago. These three photos — all dated 1898 — show a view of the St. Mary’s River from the Spy Run Bridge; the courthouse under construction; and the Aveline House. The Aveline House stood on the southeast corner of Berry and Calhoun. It was built in the 1860s and was one of the area’s premier hotels for nearly 50 years. A horrific fire destroyed the Aveline House in 1909 and caused the death of 12 people.
