In 1925, President Coolidge issued the first Presidential Proclamation of Fire Prevention Week. Back then, it fell on October 4 – 10; in 1949, President Truman designated October 9 – 15 as Fire Prevention Week. In the “Baby Flame Contest” advertised here — one of many, many activities during Fire Prevention Week — parents could dress their babies in a “fire” costume. We don’t know what the winner got. |
