Cabin Fever? There’s a Playlist for That

Are you as sick as I am of being trapped indoors due to the sheer nastiness of the winter weather? Do you need something to help you cope? Well, even if YOU don’t, I do, and I’m sure that there are many others out there like me who spend every winter staring at their calendars waiting for April, while cursing the groundhog for seeing his shadow.

So I’ve made a playlist for all of you that I think will help get us all through this last stretch of coldness. Now, I’ve chosen each song on here for a specific reason, and, to help you readers know why a song is here, I’ve categorized them.

If a song is categorized under 1, that means I think the melody and instrumentation are stirring enough to help pull you out of that winter haze. Songs under 2 are a somewhat f-you to nature, sort of like saying “go ahead and be crappy, I shall rock regardless.” 3’s are the opposite of 2, meaning the song (be it in the music, lyrics, whatever) just seem fitting for cold weather, like, say, a soundtrack for a blizzard. Last, songs in the 4th category are pure self-indulgence. They are kind of like the 3’s, in that I think they fit the weather, but instead of a blizzard, these songs are more for the folks who want to wallow in some misery and reflect on their slushy feet.

The Shins - “Caring is Creepy” --1
Nico - “These Days” --3
Bruce Springsteen - “Atlantic City” --4
Portishead - “Mysterons” --3
Bob Dylan - “The Times They are A-Changin’” --4
Radiohead - “Everything in its Right Place” --1
The Cure - “Love Song” --1
Mogwai - “Batcat” --3
Death Cab for Cutie - “I Will Follow You into the Dark” --4
Cursive - “The Martyr” --2
The Hold Steady “Chips Ahoy!” --1
The Smiths - “Still Ill” --2
Freedy Johnston - “Bad Reputation” --4
Iron and Wine - “Jezebel” --3
Sufjan Stevens - “They Are Night Zombies!! They Are Neighbors!! The Have Come Back from the Dead!! Ahhhh!!” --1
Pixies - “This Monkey’s Gone to Heaven” --2
Skip James - “Hard Time Killing Floor Blues” --4
Mission of Burma - “Academy Fight Song” --2
Pinback - “Penelope” --3
The Sword - “Barael’s Blade” --2
Elton John - “Madman Across the Water” --4
Simon & Garfunkle - “America” --1
The Roots - “The Seed 2.0” --2
Bonnie “Prince” Billy - “The Way” --4
The Kinks - “Village Green” --3
Minutemen - “This Ain’t No Picnic” --2

And there’s a little something for your winter blues. I wish I could do more to help, but I’m just a poor writer. Hold tight, everybody, Curtis Smith’s beard tells me that, if we stick together, we’re gonna get through this OK.
